Teach your kids the basics of computer programming with PicoCricket
in Miscellaneous Gadgets For Kids
The PicoCricket is an ingenious kit which helps to teach your children the basics of computer programming, while allowing them to have fun at the same time. For $250, this kit from the Playful Invention Company uses Lego Bricks, pipe cleaners and other goofy materials along with specially designed sensors which are capable of detecting light, motion, touch and sound.
Your kids can construct an object and use the PicoBlocks software to create a program, which they can then download to their creation with a USB cable. The software is easy to use; your kid creates their program by dragging different blocks on the screen which contain different commands such as “play sound” or “lights off”, and generates their own control program. Your little inventor can create almost anything, like a cake that lights up when people sing, or a cat that purrs when you pet it. The 2007 edition of PicoCricket includes “motion modules” which can help demonstrate scientific and engineering concepts for middle school children, making this an excellent toy for a wide range of ages.
